Bread Sauce

Using leftover bread to thicken up various different sauces was very common in Medieval times. But the simple bread sauce recipe became an integral part of a Christmas Day feast and has managed to stand the test of time.

And why wouldn’t it?

It takes less than 30 minutes to make, uses up leftover stale bread and tastes fantastic. Ours is extra creamy and delicious because we’ve used award winning a2 Milk™! We’ve even used homemade a2 Milk™ butter to ensure the whole recipe is naturally free from the A1 protein.

Yield: serves 4


  • 2 bay leaves
  • 100g white breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp salt


  • Stud the onion all over with cloves.

Bread Sauce step 1

  • Simmer a2 Milk™ with butter, onion and cloves, garlic and bay leaves.

Bread Sauce step 2

  • Strain and return liquid into the pan. Add breadcrumbs and stir for a few more minutes. Season with nutmeg and salt and serve.
